12 Things to Do in Santorini: A Guide to the Jewel of the Aegean

Santorini—a mesmerizing jewel of the Aegean Sea, where every corner offers a postcard-worthy view and every sunset takes your breath away. Known for its stunning caldera vistas, iconic blue-domed churches, and charming villages perched on dramatic cliffs, Santorini is a destination that captures your soul. But this island is more than just a pretty face. It’s a treasure trove of ancient history, fascinating culture, and hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

From walking the ancient paths of Akrotiri to savoring local wines overlooking the caldera, Santorini has a magic that caters to every traveler’s dreams.

12 Things to Do in Santorini

1. Explore the Charming Streets of Oia

Oia is the most famous village in Santorini, and it’s easy to see why. With its narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches, and vibrant bougainvillaea cascading from balconies, Oia is a photographer’s paradise.

I remember the feeling of getting lost in the maze of alleyways, stumbling upon hidden cafes where the scent of freshly baked baklava filled the air. Don’t miss stopping at a traditional pastry shop to try some baklava or local yogurt with honey—it’s a delightful treat that adds a sweet note to your day of exploring!

2. Catch the Sunset at Oia Castle

Watching the sunset in Oia is a must-do experience! I hopped on a  sightseeing bus tour and headed to Oia Castle, a popular spot where you can witness the sun slowly dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange, pink, and purple.

It does get crowded, so make sure to arrive early to claim your spot. The atmosphere is pure magic, with people from all around the world gathering to share in this stunning natural spectacle.

3. Visit the Archaeological Site of Akrotiri

Known as the “Pompeii of the Aegean,” Akrotiri is an ancient Minoan city preserved in volcanic ash after a massive eruption in the 16th century BC. As I wandered through the well-preserved ruins, I could almost hear the whispers of the past and imagine what life was like thousands of years ago. Walking through the site, you feel like a detective uncovering the secrets of a lost civilization. If you love history, this is a place you simply cannot miss!

Tip: Book your guided tour of Akrotiri in advance to avoid queues and ensure a knowledgeable guide to bring the ruins to life.

4. Swim at the Red Beach

Red Beach, near Akrotiri, is unlike any other beach in Santorini, with its striking red cliffs and dark sand creating a stark contrast against the deep blue waters.

I took a short hike down to the beach, feeling the crunch of volcanic pebbles underfoot, and was instantly mesmerized by the dramatic landscape. It’s a bit of an adventure to get here, but every step is worth it! Don’t forget to bring water shoes, as the pebbles can be sharp.

5. Hike from Fira to Oia

This 10 km (6 miles) trail is one of the most scenic hikes in Greece, winding along the edge of the caldera and offering breathtaking views of the sea, cliffs, and whitewashed villages. I set out early in the morning to avoid the midday heat, with plenty of stops along the way to capture the stunning panoramas. The trail took about four hours, but with every turn revealing a new breathtaking view, time flew by. Trust me, the experience is worth every step!

Tip: Wear comfortable shoes for the hike from Fira to Oia—it’s a stunning trail, but the path can be uneven in places. Also, pack plenty of water and sunscreen, especially if you’re hiking in the summer months when the sun is strong. And don’t forget your camera—the views along the way are absolutely breathtaking!

I booked my hike from here.

6. Hot Springs of Nea Kameni

Take a boat tour to the volcanic island of Nea Kameni and soak in the warm, mineral-rich waters of its natural hot springs. The boat ride itself offers stunning views of the caldera, and there’s nothing quite like the experience of swimming in waters warmed by volcanic activity. The healing waters, rich in sulfur, iron, and manganese, are said to have therapeutic properties, especially for those with joint and skin ailments.

7. Village of Pyrgos

Pyrgos is a hidden gem in Santorini, often overlooked by tourists. I fell in love with its narrow streets, traditional houses, and panoramic views from the hilltop castle ruins. It’s a quiet village with a charming atmosphere, perfect for a leisurely stroll and a coffee at one of its quaint cafes.

8. Wine Tasting at Santo Wines

Santorini is known for its unique wines, thanks to the volcanic soil that gives them a distinct flavor. I visited Santo Wines, a beautiful winery overlooking the caldera. The wine-tasting experience was delightful, with a variety of local wines paired with cheese and olives. Don’t miss trying the Assyrtiko wine, a local favorite!

Tip: Book a wine tour to sample the best of Santorini’s wines and learn about the unique winemaking process. Book your wine tours here.

9. Black Sand Beaches of Kamari and Perissa

Santorini’s volcanic landscape creates beautiful black sand beaches, and Kamari and Perissa are two of the most popular. I spent a blissful afternoon sunbathing on the warm sand, swimming in the crystal-clear waters, and sipping cocktails at a beachfront bar. It’s a great way to unwind and enjoy the island’s unique coastal beauty.

10. Village of Megalochori

Megalochori is one of Santorini’s most charming villages, filled with narrow alleys, hidden courtyards, and traditional bell towers. Walking through its quiet streets felt like stepping back in time, with the scent of jasmine and the gentle chimes of church bells in the air. Don’t miss trying some delicious local cuisine at a taverna.

11. Catamaran Day Trip

There’s no better way to experience Santorini than from the sea. I joined a sunset catamaran cruise that sailed around the caldera, stopping for swimming and snorkeling. The highlight was enjoying a delicious onboard barbecue and wine while watching the sun set over the Aegean—a truly unforgettable experience!

12. Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira

The Prehistoric Thera museum houses a fascinating collection of artifacts from the ancient city of Akrotiri, including pottery, frescoes, and tools. I found it to be a great way to complement my visit to the archaeological site, as it provided deeper insight into the island’s ancient history. At only €6 per person, it’s a must-visit for history lovers.

How to Get Around Santorini

Getting around Santorini is relatively easy. The island has a good network of local buses that connect the main villages, beaches, and attractions. Renting a car, ATV, or scooter is a popular option for those who want more flexibility—I rented an ATV, and it was a fun way to explore the island's nooks and crannies. Taxis are also available, but they can be pricey and limited during peak season.

Where to Stay in Santorini

The Caldera is undoubtedly one of the most iconic and sought-after spots in Santorini, drawing travelers from all over the world. It's not hard to see why—this stunning natural wonder is one of the most breathtaking sights on the planet. The Caldera, a 300-meter-high basin, was formed following a massive volcanic eruption in 1613 BC, which caused the center of Santorini to collapse into the depths of the Aegean Sea, creating the island's unique and dramatic landscape.

Many first-time visitors choose to stay in a hotel perched on the cliffs of the Caldera, and it's easy to see the appeal. Thanks to Santorini's distinctive terrain, many hotels boast luxurious infinity pools that appear to blend seamlessly with the vast Aegean Sea, creating a serene and endless expanse of blue. There's nothing quite like lounging with your feet dipped in a pool, cocktail in hand, and taking in the stunning panoramic views that surround you—it's the perfect way to unwind and soak up the island's beauty.

Most of the hotels with these mesmerizing infinity pools are located in the Caldera's main villages—Oia, Imerovigli, Fira, Firostefani, Akrotiri, and Megalochori—and offer the ultimate in luxury vacations. The highest-end hotels can be found in Fira, Oia, and Imerovigli, while those looking for more budget-friendly options might consider Megalochori or Akrotiri.

Fira, the bustling capital of Santorini, is known for its vibrant shopping scene and lively bar culture, offering visitors an exciting array of experiences. Oia, famed for its luxury accommodations and boutique shops, has a charming village ambiance and is also close to Ammoudi, where you can enjoy gourmet dining by the sea. However, it can get quite busy, especially around sunset.

For a more tranquil experience, Imerovigli is the perfect choice, providing access to some of Santorini's most luxurious hotels without the crowds. Alternatively, Megalochori, a quiet village centrally located on the island, offers proximity to the beautiful Perissa and Perivolos beaches. If you have your own transport, Akrotiri is another great option, especially if you want to be near the famous Red Beach while enjoying a quieter stay.
