Stretching along the Mediterranean Sea, the North Coast, or Sahel, is a nearly 1,000-kilometer-long strip of coastline that has become synonymous with luxury, leisure, and a vibrant social scene. From exclusive resorts and private villas to lively beach clubs and nightspots, the Sahel is where Egyptians go to see and be seen during the summer months. With its crystal-clear waters, soft sands, and a backdrop of endless blue skies, the North Coast is the perfect escape for those seeking relaxation and excitement in equal measure.
Our visits to the Sahel are nothing short of magical. The moment we arrive, we are struck by the sheer beauty of the landscape – the way the sea sparkles in the sunlight, the soft feel of the sand between our toes, and the vibrant energy that fills the air. It’s a place that quickly became a second home during the summer, a retreat where we could unwind and enjoy the best of what Egypt has to offer.
When to Go
The best time to visit the North Coast Sahel is during the summer months, from June to September, when the weather is warm and perfect for beach activities. This is also when the Sahel comes alive with events, parties, and a lively social scene. However, it’s worth noting that this is peak season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices, especially in popular spots like Marassi, Hacienda, and Amwaj.
During the peak of summer, we love the energy that fills the Sahel. The beaches are buzzing with life, and there’s always something happening, whether it’s a beach party, a live music event, or just a casual gathering of friends around a bonfire. But we’ve also experienced the quieter side of the Sahel in early May, when the crowds have yet to arrive – it’s a completely different vibe, more peaceful and reflective.
Getting To & Around the North Coast Sahel
1. Driving: Most locals and visitors prefer to drive to the Sahel. The North Coast is about a two to three-hour drive from Cairo, depending on where you’re heading. The main road, Alexandria-Matrouh Road (also known as the Coastal Road), is well-maintained and offers a scenic route along the Mediterranean.
Having your own car gives you the freedom to explore the various beaches, resorts, and attractions at your own pace. I’ve always found driving along this road to be part of the adventure, with the endless blue of the sea on one side and the desert landscape on the other. Just make sure to fill up on gas before you leave, as gas stations can be sparse along the route.
2. Private Transfers and Taxis: If you prefer not to drive, there are private transfer services like uber and taxis are available. Many resorts offer shuttle services from Cairo or Alexandria, which can be convenient if you’re staying in a single location.
Taxis can also be hired for the day if you plan to beach-hop or explore different parts of the Sahel. There are several different services/apps that can take you from Cairo to the North Coast and guide you in North Coast, such as Uber, Careem, Didi or London Cab, but you need to book in advance.

Car rental services are available in Cairo, Alexandria, and even some parts of the Sahel. Renting a car gives you the flexibility to explore the area at your leisure. I once rented a car with friends for a weekend trip, and it allowed us to visit multiple beaches and restaurants that would have been harder to reach otherwise.
4. Biking and Walking: For short distances, especially within resort areas, biking or walking can be enjoyable. Many resorts offer bike rentals, which are perfect for a leisurely ride along the beach or exploring nearby areas.
