North Coast Sahel: Egypt's Mediterranean Escape

North Coast Sahel: Egypt's Mediterranean Escape

The North Coast, known locally as the Sahel, is Egypt’s go-to summer destination, where turquoise waters meet pristine white sands. It’s a place where the hustle and bustle of Cairo is left far behind, and the days are filled with sun, sea, and unforgettable experiences. In this blog, I’ll take you through everything you need to know about the North Coast Sahel, from when to visit and what to do, to where to stay, where to eat, how to get around, what to bring, and how we locals make the most of this stunning Mediterranean paradise.

Stretching along the Mediterranean Sea, the North Coast, or Sahel, is a nearly 1,000-kilometer-long strip of coastline that has become synonymous with luxury, leisure, and a vibrant social scene. From exclusive resorts and private villas to lively beach clubs and nightspots, the Sahel is where Egyptians go to see and be seen during the summer months. With its crystal-clear waters, soft sands, and a backdrop of endless blue skies, the North Coast is the perfect escape for those seeking relaxation and excitement in equal measure.

Our visits to the Sahel are nothing short of magical. The moment we arrive, we are struck by the sheer beauty of the landscape – the way the sea sparkles in the sunlight, the soft feel of the sand between our toes, and the vibrant energy that fills the air. It’s a place that quickly became a second home during the summer, a retreat where we could unwind and enjoy the best of what Egypt has to offer.

When to Go

The best time to visit the North Coast Sahel is during the summer months, from June to September, when the weather is warm and perfect for beach activities. This is also when the Sahel comes alive with events, parties, and a lively social scene. However, it’s worth noting that this is peak season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices, especially in popular spots like Marassi, Hacienda, and Amwaj.

During the peak of summer, we love the energy that fills the Sahel. The beaches are buzzing with life, and there’s always something happening, whether it’s a beach party, a live music event, or just a casual gathering of friends around a bonfire. But we’ve also experienced the quieter side of the Sahel in early May, when the crowds have yet to arrive – it’s a completely different vibe, more peaceful and reflective.

Getting To & Around the North Coast Sahel

1. Driving: Most locals and visitors prefer to drive to the Sahel. The North Coast is about a two to three-hour drive from Cairo, depending on where you’re heading. The main road, Alexandria-Matrouh Road (also known as the Coastal Road), is well-maintained and offers a scenic route along the Mediterranean.

Having your own car gives you the freedom to explore the various beaches, resorts, and attractions at your own pace. I’ve always found driving along this road to be part of the adventure, with the endless blue of the sea on one side and the desert landscape on the other. Just make sure to fill up on gas before you leave, as gas stations can be sparse along the route.

2. Private Transfers and Taxis: If you prefer not to drive, there are private transfer services like uber and taxis  are available. Many resorts offer shuttle services from Cairo or Alexandria, which can be convenient if you’re staying in a single location.

Taxis can also be hired for the day if you plan to beach-hop or explore different parts of the Sahel. There are several different services/apps that can take you from Cairo to the North Coast and guide you in North Coast, such as Uber, CareemDidi or London Cab, but you need to book in advance.

3. Renting a Car: If you don’t have your own vehicle, renting a car is a great option for getting around the Sahel. Car rental services are available in Cairo, Alexandria, and even some parts of the Sahel. Renting a car gives you the flexibility to explore the area at your leisure. I once rented a car with friends for a weekend trip, and it allowed us to visit multiple beaches and restaurants that would have been harder to reach otherwise.

4. Biking and Walking: For short distances, especially within resort areas, biking or walking can be enjoyable. Many resorts offer bike rentals, which are perfect for a leisurely ride along the beach or exploring nearby areas. Walking is also a great way to take in the scenery and discover hidden spots within your resort or along the coast.

Things to Do in the North Coast Sahel

1. Beach Hopping

The Sahel is home to some of Egypt’s most beautiful beaches, each with its own unique charm. Whether you’re lounging on the private sands of Marassi, enjoying the laid-back atmosphere of Diplo, or exploring the crystal-clear waters of Hacienda Bay, beach hopping is a must-do activity. One of my favorite pastimes is simply spending the day moving from one beach to another, soaking up the sun and enjoying the different vibes each one offers.

2. Water Sports and Activities

For those who love the water, the Sahel offers a wide range of activities, including Kayakingjet skiing, paddleboarding, and snorkeling. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of jet skiing across the Mediterranean or the serene experience of paddleboarding at sunrise. During one of my trips, I tried parasailing for the first time – soaring above the sea with the coastline stretching out beneath me was an exhilarating experience that I highly recommend.

3. Nightlife and Beach Clubs

The North Coast is famous for its vibrant nightlife, with numerous beach clubs and nightspots offering everything from live music to DJ sets and themed parties. Places like Sol Beach and The Lemon Tree & Co. are popular among the younger crowd, offering a mix of great music, good food, and a lively atmosphere. Some of my best memories in the Sahel are from these beach clubs – dancing the night away with friends, the sound of the waves in the background, and the stars twinkling overhead.

4. Dining Experiences

The Sahel boasts an impressive culinary scene, with restaurants offering everything from traditional Egyptian dishes to international cuisine. Dining by the sea is a quintessential Sahel experience. One evening, I had the pleasure of dining at Sachi By The Sea in Marrasi and Almaza Bay, where the fresh seafood and breathtaking views made for an unforgettable meal. Whether you’re in the mood for a casual beachside snack or a fine dining experience, the Sahel has it all.

5. Shopping and Markets

The North Coast is also home to several shopping areas and markets where you can pick up everything from designer clothing to local crafts. I love strolling through the boutiques in Marassi or checking out the local markets for unique souvenirs and handmade goods! Don't forget to snag a cup of Salted Carmel frappuccino from Koffee Kulture! it's our go-to coffee spot right now!

6. Golfing

For those who enjoy a round of golf, the Sahel offers several world-class golf courses with stunning views of the Mediterranean. I’m not an avid golfer myself, but I’ve accompanied friends on a few occasions, and even as a spectator, it’s easy to appreciate the beauty and tranquility of the courses.

For golf enthusiasts, the Address Marassi Golf Resort is an excellent choice. The resort is nestled within a stunning golf course and offers luxury accommodations, fine dining, and access to Marassi’s beaches and other facilities. It’s the perfect spot for those looking to enjoy both beach and golf.

 7. Attending Events and Festivals

Throughout the summer, the Sahel hosts a variety of events and festivals, ranging from music concerts and fashion shows to art exhibitions and cultural performances. One summer, I attended Paradise a concert by the sea, where the combination of live music, the sound of the waves, and the cool evening breeze made for an unforgettable experience.

If you're planning to attend one of these events, you can easily purchase tickets through popular platforms like CollardTickets, TicketEgypt, and TicketsMarche. These websites offer a convenient way to secure your spot at some of the most exciting happenings in the Sahel, ensuring you don’t miss out on the fun.

8. Exploring New Alamein City

New Alamein City is more than just a beach destination; it's a cultural and historical hub. Visit the Al-Alamein Military Museum to delve into the region's rich history, or explore the Al-Alamein International Sculpture Symposium, which attracts artists from around the world. The city is also home to various art galleries and cultural centers, making it a perfect spot for history buffs and art enthusiasts.
